Charlie’s Peranakan Food was previously a popular hawker stall, with Charlie having served up scrumptious Peranakan dishes for many years before deciding to retire in 2013. However, it didn’t take him long to step out of retirement and soon opened his stall again at Golden Mile Food Centre in 2017.

Compared to other Peranakan restaurants, Charlie’s Peranakan Food definitely stands out with its authentic dishes and affordable prices. Charlie continues to serve up delectable dishes, with his best-sellers like Ayam Buah Keluak, Bakwan Kepiting, and Chap Chye, drawing Peranakan food lovers across the island.

For those who have yet to try buah keluak, it is certainly an acquired taste. However, fret not as Charlie’s Ayam Buah Keluak ($13) is much lighter in flavour as compared to the more traditional ones, making it more palatable. Popsicle sticks are also given to help you scoop out the buah keluak.

The sauce is incredibly rich and flavourful from the buah keluak and spices, pairing perfectly with the rice. For first-timers or for those who find the gravy a tad too strong, be sure to mix it with the rice to balance out the flavours.

The buah keluak itself is stuffed with the bitter nut and minced pork. What’s unique is that the minced pork adds another layer of sweetness and umami while balancing out the bitterness of the buah keluak. It’s certainly an ingredient you don’t usually find in other buak keluak dishes, making Charlie’s a standout. Additionally, the chicken is braised in the gravy, making it seriously tender and flavourful. For the price point and the quality you’re getting at Charlie’s, there really isn’t much to complain about.
