If you work in the CBD, you may have come across Taste of Jiang Nan, a popular Chinese stall at Maxwell Food Centre. Previously known for their Din Tai Fung-style fried rice with pork chop, the hawker stall has recently reopened with a new menu that specialises in sheng jian bao, AKA pan-fried buns.

For the uninitiated, sheng jian bao are pan-fried buns filled with a savoury pork filling. This Chinese snack is said to be especially famous in Suzhou and Shanghai. At Taste of Jiang Nan, you can get them at $4 for three pieces, for the original flavour.
Those who want something different can try the Prawn Fried Bun ($5 for three), or the Curry Fried Bun ($4.50 for three) instead. Whichever you pick, each bao is pan-fried to order, so you get them hot and fresh. The bottom is said to have a crisp, browned layer, while the other side of the bun remains soft and fluffy.

On top of sheng jian bao, the stall is also popular for their Xiao Long Bao, priced at $5 for six pieces.

Dumpling fans can fill up on their Red Oil Dumplings ($6.50), which gets you 10 plump and juicy pork dumplings tossed in a fragrant, savoury chilli oil sauce. If you’re feeling extra peckish, get the version that comes with noodles instead, at the same price!

Do note that the queue gets pretty long during the peak lunch hour, so make sure you head down before or after to avoid the long waiting time.
Taste of Jiang Nan is located in Maxwell Food Centre, which is right across from Maxwell MRT Station. While you’re there, do check out Dan Lao, another popular stall in the same hawker centre that sells creamy scrambled eggs on rice.
If you’re up for more handmade dim sum and noodles, head to the nearby Shang Hai Fried Xiao Long Bao at Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre.
