Ho Kee Bak Chang has a Michelin Bib Gourmand award

While we’re used to stalls selling classic Singaporean hawker dishes making an appearance on the coveted Michelin Bib Gourmand list, there are always a handful of surprises. There’s Du Du Cooked Food, a Michelin-approved tutu kueh stall, Sing Lung HK Cheong Fun for acclaimed cheung fan rolls, and also Hoo Kee Bak Chang, which serves up rice dumplings that have earned them a spot on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list for five years now.

Hoo Kee serves their famous bak chang from two locations: a stall in Amoy Street Food Centre, and another in Bukit Merah Central.

They were first established in the 1940s as itinerant hawkers. Founder Chew Hai Chwee was struggling to make a living after the war and turned to selling handmade dumplings to support his family. Four decades later, they set up a permanent shop at Amoy Street Food Centre, where they continue to sell their Hokkien rice dumplings to date.

Hoo Kee Bak Chang has a few different options on their menu, all of them made from scratch and wrapped by hand daily.

The base for all the dumplings remains the same: you get the savoury glutinous rice, pieces of pork belly spotted throughout. You get to pick between three variations: Chestnut Dumpling ($3.50), Salted Egg With Chestnut Dumpling ($4.50), Mushroom with Chestnut Dumpling ($4.50), and Chestnut Pork with Salted Egg and Mushroom Dumpling ($5.50). All their dumplings come wrapped and steamed in banana leaves.

Hoo Kee has made a name for themselves thanks to how flavourful and rich their bak chang are. Don’t expect these to be light—instead, they’re dense, fatty, and delicious in the best way possible. Note that they do increase their prices around Dragon Boat Festival, but we do think these are worth buying for your family get-together. If you’d like to enjoy these in bulk, do place an order in advance by calling their outlets via the details below.
