When it comes to good food at Chinatown, you’ll no doubt be spoilt for choice. With plenty of popular hawker centres to visit like Hong Lim Food Cente and Maxwell Food Centre, People’s Park Food Centre is definitely one to check out if you have yet to. Offering unique dishes like Loh Mei and scrumptious ones like Roasted Meats, Bak Kwa, Hainanese Beef Noodles, and more, you’ll be leaving with a satisfied tummy for sure!

1. Zhen Zhu Fang Roasted Delights

Having been listed in the Michelin Guide with a Michelin Plate for several years, Zhen Zhu Fang continues to draw crowds with their delicious roasted meats. Their roast pork is incredibly crispy, succulent, and flavourful, with a good ratio of fat to lean meat.

The char siew has a beautiful layer of char around the edges, giving crispiness and a slight bitterness. Each slice has a nice layer of fats and the sweetness from the marinade pairs well with the spicy and tangy chilli. Lastly, the roast duck is flavourful and a lot juicier and tender as compared to others. Additionally, it isn’t too gamey and the sambal helps to lift the flavours with layers of sweetness and umami.

2. Kim Hua Guan

Who ever said Bak Kwa should only be eaten during Chinese New Year? Founded in the 1960s, Kim Hua Guan has established itself as one of the most traditional brands in the barbecued meat industry.

Their signature bak kwa is nicely cut into thick slices, with a good layer of fats. It has a good balance of sweetness and blends well with the flavour of the pork. Their spicy version stands out as you first enjoy the sweetness of the marinade, followed by a delightful kick of spice that lingers and makes you crave for more with each bite. Definitely a must-try spot for bak kwa lovers!

3. Hong Peng La Mian Xiao Long Bao

A popular Michelin-recommended stall, Hong Peng serves up handmade dumplings and noodles that are made fresh daily. Their Xiao Long Bao is s generously stuffed with minced pork, chives, and a flavourful pork broth while their Guo Tie are fried to a beautiful and crispy golden brown.

For those looking for something more substantial, their hand-pulled noodles are also highly-raved, with dishes ranging from Zha Jiang Mian, and Beef Noodles to Spicy Chicken Ramen.

4. Ri Ri Hong Mala Xiang Guo

Probably one of the most popular mala stalls at this hawker centre, Ri Ri Hong even has two stalls located here! They offer an array of your typical mala ingredients, ranging from meat, seafood, vegetables, and favourites like Chinese sausage, enoki mushrooms, glass noodles and lotus root.

Unlike most Mala Xiang Guo stalls where you choose and take your own amount of ingredients, customers here instead point to the ingredients that they want, tell the staff the number of people eating and they will take it for you. As prices of ingredients are listed, some customers prefer this method as they can plan how much they intend to spend before ordering.

Catering to the local tastebuds, their balance of spiciness and numbness is just right, as well as the level of oiliness. Its certainly no surprise to see why they continue drawing crowds from all over the island.

5. Lek Kee Authentic Teochew Braised Duck

Drawing snaking queues daily, Lek Kee is so popular, they are usually sold out by late lunch. Serving authentic Teochew Braised Duck, their duck is tender and doused in an aromatic sauce, made with soy sauce and various herbs and spices. The sauce is well-balanced and gives the duck a delectable flavour.

Another standout is their pork belly that’s braised in the same sauce as well. To zhng up your meal, you can also opt to add on ingredients like braised eggs, tau kau, pig’s stomach, duck liver, and gizzards. Do head down early as queues start forming even before the stall opens!

6. Loh Mei Specialist

Believe it or not, this is the only hawker stall in Singapore serving Loh Mei. Also known as Loh Kai Yik in Cantonese, it was popular in the 1950s and 1960s and used to be sold in a moving cart. Now, you can only find this dying dish at Loh Mei Specialist!

The key component is none other than its stew, made from red fermented soybean paste which has a distinctive flavour. It has a strong fermented soybean taste, and it is a combination of spicy, sweet, and salty. It is recommended to pair the dish with a bowl of white rice to help neutralise the overall flavour.

Some of the ingredients include pork belly, pig’s intestines, cuttlefish, chicken wings, and tofu puffs. They are well-cooked with a tender texture. As it is very time consuming to make it, Loh Mei Specialist definitely stands out with this unique dish!

7. Yong Xiang Xing Dou Fu

While there might be a few Yong Tau Foo stalls here, Yong Xiang Xing Dou Fu no doubt draws the longest queues despite only opening for three hours daily. Served in a pre-fixed set, their yong tau foo with soup comes with ten ingredients, ranging from fishball and stuffed tofu to fried tofu and meat rolls.

They don’t serve rice or noodles with it as well, making it a good low-carb meal. The soup is light and flavourful while the ingredients are tasty and fresh. Though pretty simple, it is a comforting and hearty dish that customers can’t get enough of.

8. Hometown Hainan Fen

For a taste of authentic Hainanese Noodles, Hometown Hainan Fen is just the spot to head to at Chinatown. Popular for their Beef Noodles, it differs from the typical gooey and starchy version most of us are used to. Served with roasted peanuts, pickled vegetables, bamboo shoots, and thinly shredded beef, it is doused with their starchy brown sauce. The meat is tender and the gravy has a hint of sweetness, with the chilli adding spice and sourness for a delightful balance of flavours.

9. Fatt Soon Kueh

First opened in Bedok in 1999, Fatt Soon Kueh has since expanded with two more outlets, one at Chinatown and the other at Kovan. Specialising in traditional Teochew Kuehs, their Soon Kueh are their bestsellers which are made with a mix of jicama, carrot, black fungus and bamboo shoots, all encased in a silly and chewy crystal skin. Their Png Kueh and Gu Chye Kueh are also pretty popular as well, pairing perfectly with their spicy chilli sauce. They are often sold out before their closing time, so be sure to head down early!
