A humble hawker stall at the popular Bedok 85 Food Centre, Shanghai Xiao Long Bao offers a wide variety of noodles ranging from Zha Jiang Mian ($4) and Pork Ribs Noodles ($4.50) to Chicken Chop Noodles ($4.50) and Sour & Spicy Noodles ($4). Not forgetting their handmade dumplings, choose from your classic Xiao Long Bao, Steamed Dumplings, or their Pan-Fried Dumplings, also known as Guo Tie.

Compared to the Xiao Long Bao you typically get outside, the ones here are much bigger! Although the skin is slightly thicker than normal, the generous amount of soup and filling of minced pork definitely makes up for it. The soup is light yet flavourful and the minced pork is well-seasoned, making it still pretty delicious overall. For a delightful pairing, dip it into the vinegar for an extra burst of acidity to lift the flavours.

If you’re looking for something that’s tasty and value for money, be sure to go for the Pan-Fried Dumplings. Cooked to perfection, the exterior is crispy yet not too oily, with the thickness of the skin absolutely nailed. The filling of the minced pork is really flavourful and the chives add a pleasant layer of crunch to each bite. Additionally, the char on the outside gives a slight smokiness to the dumplings which help to elevate them.
