Food Republic at City Square Mall has recently undergone a revamp, offering an immersive experience that pays tribute to the 1980s. The new design, reminiscent of a carpark, is inspired by the open-air street hawker stalls that were prevalent in Singapore during the 1970s and 1980s.
Experience The 80s At Food Republic City Square
Step back in time with the revamped food court featuring old-school advertising posters, bamboo blinds, and concrete-textured walls, all designed to evoke the charm of the past. The ceiling, painted with sky and cloud motifs, enhances the al fresco dining atmosphere.
Special-themed corners, including vintage taxi service booths with signs, carpark mirrors, roadside fences, a five-foot walkway, and shophouse replicas, offer perfect photo spots.
Heritage Food Galore
Naturally, the line-up of food stalls at the revamped Food Republic complements the nostalgic theme. Vendors have been specially selected for their rich histories and significant contributions to Singapore’s culinary scene.
Among them is HJH Maimunah, a Michelin Bib Gourmand winner known for its kampong-style Malay nasi padang since 1992. One highly recommended dish is the Tahu Telur, a traditional Indonesian delicacy featuring tofu battered with whisked egg and deep-fried to golden-brown perfection. It is then generously topped with peanut sauce and bean sprouts.
Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodles is a renowned establishment and a Bib Gourmand winner who has been using the same recipe since 1968. Their signature offerings include fish balls, fish cakes, and fish dumplings, all made purely from yellowtail fish and crafted by hand.
The firmness and bounce of their fish balls are a testament to their quality and craftsmanship. Additionally, the noodles, tossed with crispy cracklings, provide a delightful texture and flavour.
If you’re still craving noodles, head over to Thye Hong Hokkien Mee, where their namesake dish has been a favourite since the 1970s. This dish features wet and piping hot noodles drenched in an umami-packed gravy, complemented by succulent prawns and squid.
At their City Square Mall outlet, they have revived the traditional technique of serving the ingredients on opei leaves, which enhances the aroma. For an extra kick, the sambal chili adds just the right amount of heat to elevate the indulgence.
Make your way to Quench, where you can indulge in its exclusive offering, the Ice Ball ($2). This nostalgic shaved ice dessert is the perfect ice-cold treat to conclude your meal.
In celebration of their reopening, enjoy an exclusive promotion from now until June 30! Customers who spend a minimum of $12 in a single receipt will receive a Tikam Tikam scratch card, which offers instant-win prizes such as Food Republic vouchers and promotional items from tenants, priced at $3 each.
