Fire Rice has pork chop fried rice by an ex-Din Tai Fung chef

Everyone knows Din Tai Fung, the popular Taiwanese restaurant famous for their delicious xiao long bao and pork chop fried rice. Recently, there has been a wave of hawker stalls selling Din Tai Fung-style fried rice at half the price of what you would get at the restaurant—think Ding Gua Gua and Hao Lai Ke. Another one that recently caught our attention is Fire Rice, located in Toa Payoh and Yishun.

Fire Rice is run by an ex-DTF chef with more than 10 years of experience working in the restaurant. He has come up with 16 different flavours of fried rice here, which are categorised into two groups: the Egg Fried Rice Series, and the Sambal Fried Rice Series.

A crowd favourite is the Sambal Black Pepper Smoked Duck Fried Rice ($7.50), which features nine slices of smoked duck meat atop a warm bed of sambal fried rice. Duck meat, when done wrong, tends to be dry and tough. But thankfully, you get nicely charred, sizeable duck meat slices here.

Of course, there’s the classic Black Pepper Pork Chop Fried Rice too! For the price of $7, it’s impressive how thick each slice of pork chop is. Their egg fried rice is said to be flavourful on its own, but the addition of the black pepper pork chop is a quick way to zhng up the otherwise simple dish.

If you’d like to try something different, we recommend their Taiwanese Chicken Cutlet Fried Rice ($6.50) which comes with a huge crispy chicken cutlet on the side. This kind of reminds us of Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks’ XXL Crispy Chicken, but better and heartier as it’s paired with their aromatic egg or sambal fried rice.

There are also side dishes to go with your fried rice such as the Prawn Paste Chicken Wing ($1.70 each). Else, you can get their Black Pepper Pork Chop ($4.20) or Spicy Deep Fried Pork Chop ($4.20) as a la carte options.

There are two stalls across the country, in Toa Payoh and Yishun. The former is an eight-minute walk from Toa Payoh MRT Station, while the latter is a nine-minute walk from Yishun MRT Station.
