Starting the list with a crowd favourite, No. 18 Zion Road Fried Kway Teow has gained recognition from many media outlets, dubbing it a “die-die must-try” spot. No. 18 Zion Road uses dark soy sauce in their char kway teow, making it darker and sweeter in comparison to others in Singapore.

Apart from its notable sweet and smokey taste, the char kway teow is also served with a generous amount of ingredients.  The noodles are stir-fried with fresh cockles, fish cakes, Chinese sausage, and pork lard. If you are craving a tasty plate of char kway teow, this spot is definitely worth checking out!

2. Zion Road Big Prawn Noodle

With a Michelin Bib Gourmand under their belt, a tasty and comforting bowl of Prawn Noodles awaits at Zion Road Big Prawn Noodle. The Dry Prawn Noodles are served with flavourful noodles that have an amazing kick of heat, with the fried shallots giving a nice layer of crunch. The pork rib is tender while the prawns are fresh and have the perfect bite to them, with a slight tinge of sweetness.

As for the soup, it is incredibly robust, with the umami flavour of the prawns and the kick of pepper shining through with each sip. Additionally, there is a pleasant hint of the pork ribs as the soup hits you at the back of the throat. A comforting bowl of soup that you can enjoy with free refills!

A hidden gem at Zion Road, what makes Soon Lee stand out is their Braised Pork Rice Sets that are served with Pig Organ Soup, giving diners the best of both worlds. Their Braised Pork Belly Rice Set is the perfect mix of indulgence and comfort, giving you succulent and fatty slices of pork and a hearty bowl of pig organ soup to wash it down for a delightful pairing. A must-try for pork lovers!

4. Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap

Not to be mistaken for the famous chicken rice restaurant chain with the same name, this Michelin Plate stall’s recipes are primarily sourced from the Internet and from experimentation, instead of being passed down from family. Known for its Braised Duck and Kway Chap, Boon Tong Kee’s duck is succulent and tender, pairing well with their spicy chilli sauce. Their signature Kway Chap is also well-received by customers and served with a portion of small and large pig intestines, braised duck meat, braised eggs, tau pok, and tofu.

5. Ah Wang La Mian Xiao Long Bao

Drawing a steady stream of regulars for their Chinese-style La Mian, Dumplings and Soups, Ah Wang’s dumplings are prepared fresh daily in the morning, packed with fillings like minced pork and chives. A more affordable option for Xiao Long Bao, they also specialise in Pan-Fried Dumplings (Guo Tie) and Steam Pork and Chive Dumplings as well. Their Guo Tie is fried till crispy and brown while their Spicy Wanton is mixed with chilli oil, sesame oil, and black vinegar, giving a good balance of flavours with a pleasant kick of heat.

Helmed by a husband-and-wife duo who are both hearing-impaired, they take orders by lip-reading and through pictures of their menu that customers can point to. Offering the classic White and Black Carrot Cake, you can also enjoy a mix of both. The white carrot cake is fried with a generous amount of eggs, giving it a delightful crispiness while the black carrot cake is mixed with dark sauce and chilli for an amazing balance of sweetness, savouriness, and spiciness.

7. Riverside Good Food

Run by a husband and wife team as well, Riverside Good Food offers a variety of local delights like Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow, and Oyster Omelette. Popular for its Hokkien Mee, it is stir-fried with plenty of eggs and delivers layers of savouriness and smokiness from the wok hei. Topped with fried pork lard and shallots, they elevate each bite with umami and crunch while the lime adds a burst of acidity and balance to the flavours.

Previously known as Xin Fei Fei Wanton Noodle, Kang’s Wanton Noodle is a good spot for old-school traditional wanton mee. Preparation of ingredients like their dumplings, char siew, and sauces starts early in the morning, ensuring freshness and quality. Their springy noodles are coated beautifully with their sauce mix, consisting of lard oil, sesame oil, chilli, and seasoning. Paired with sweet char siew, boiled dumplings, and crispy fried wantons, this tasty dish will definitely hit the spot!

9. Mohamed Sultan Road Hot & Cold Cheng Tng

Offering Cheng Tng in both the hot and cold versions, this old-school dessert stall that has been around for decades. The owner to this day continues using the same recipe which has been passed down from generations for around 50 years. The cold version is served with shaved ice, canned longan and lychee, ginkgo nuts, and tapioca balls. A sweet and refreshing treat that’s perfect for cooling off on hot days. As for your traditional hot Cheng Tng, it features all your usual ingredients like dried longan.
