9 Best Stalls To Check Out At Newton Food Centre!
1. Heng Carrot Cake
Photo:@singapore.lady (Instagram)
Established since 1971, this Michelin Bib Gourmand stall is one of the only few stalls in Singapore steaming their own carrot cake, as compared to most that get them ready-made from factories. Another unique feature of Heng is that you can order both your white and black carrot cake together, giving you the best of both worlds.
The White Carrot Cake brings you a beautiful mix of crispiness and softness, with a kick of wok hei to elevate the dish. Be sure to pair it with the chilli for extra flavour and spice!
As for the Black Carrot Cake, it leans towards the sweet side as compared to the white version. With the added dark soy sauce, every bite has a pleasant mix of sweetness and savouriness. Additionally, the spice from the chilli helps to balance out the sweetness and adds another dimension of flavour!

Barbequed to perfection, it gives the tender meat an incredible smokiness that elevates each bite. Topped with a fiery hae bi sambal, have a glass of water ready as this seriously packs a punch! Served with chinchalok and lime juice on the side, it gives balance to the flavours as well as helping to alleviate the spice.

The fish stock is boiled with fresh fish and fish bones for at least one and a half hours to achieve a flavourful broth. The Dual Fish Soup is served with sliced and fried fish, with two types of fish used, giving you a variety you don’t normally find in other fish soups. Spanish mackerel is used for the sliced fish and you can taste the freshness with each bite. On top of that, the fish has a good bite and has no trace of the fishy taste.

For the fried fish, dory fish is used. The fish is battered well and is not too thick, making it pleasantly light. The highlight of the dish is definitely the delectable and comforting soup. Every sip is a burst of flavour and has a pleasant hint of pepperiness at the end. Pair it with some rice or noodles and you’ll have the perfect meal for any rainy day!

A legendary stall at Newton Food Centre, Hup Kee’s oyster omelette is fried to a beautiful golden brown, with super crispy edges that everyone loves! Additionally, what’s great about the dish is that it’s not too oily and starchy, allowing you to enjoy the taste of the omelette. The soft starchy interior complements the crunchy exterior perfectly, making every bite a harmony of textures.
Served with a generous portion of plump and juicy oysters, there isn’t any trace of the “fishy” taste, making it palatable even for those who are not into oysters. Pair the oyster and egg with the tangy chilli sauce, and you’ll have a matchmake in heaven. Every bite is simply a perfect blend of textures and flavours!
