Wanton Mee and Char Siew Noodles are all-time Singaporean classics that hold a special place in our hearts, reminiscent of the comforting flavors we grew up with. But what if we told you there’s a place where you can savor the best of both worlds? Well, look no further than Taste The Kwang’s Black, located at Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre!

Their signboard proudly showcases their specialty dish – ‘碳烤黑叉烧 (tàn kǎo hēi chā shāo)’ – a name that literally translates to charcoal-roasted char siew, resulting in a delicious caramelized black exterior. With multiple outlets scattered across Singapore, including locations in Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Bukit Merah, Clementi, Kovan, New Upper Changi, Tanglin Halt, Upper Bukit Timah, and Yishun, you’re never far from their culinary delights.

What sets them apart is their commitment to handcrafting wantons daily, generously filled with succulent shrimp. In addition to their specialty dish, they offer other menu items such as Braised Pork Knuckle Noodles ($5) and Roasted Sausage Noodles ($4.50).

Each plate of Charcoal Char Siew Wanton Mee ($5) is served with generous portions of vegetables, mee kia (thin egg yellow noodles), char siew, and three boiled wantons. The glistening char siew on top of the noodles immediately sparks anticipation.

Boasting the perfect texture, the noodles offer just the right balance of chewiness and springiness. They are expertly seasoned and lightly oiled, providing a delightful mouthfeel with every bite with none of that alkaline taste to them.

The char siew lies more towards the lean and chewy side, with a sweetness akin to regular char siew but drier than expected. Charcoal and fatty notes that we were anticipating are absent, which is a tad bit disappointing.

In contrast, the wanton far outshines the char siew. Shrimp filling, instead of the usual pork, is used in each wanton. The plump and juicy shrimp encapsulated within results in a delightful seafood sweetness and satisfying crunch. Not to mention, the ratio of skin to filling is perfect. The chili, while it could have been spicier, is at a level suitable for those who prefer a subtle kick in their meal.

Light and comforting, the soup is a good contrast to the heavy dish.
