The owner Mr Lim, opened his first outlet at Marsiling in 1996. He roped in his family to help out with the business. His children have even dedicated their time and effort to help out with the business even while they were still schooling. It’s truly inspiring to see the effort put in by the entire family!

Mr Lim learned the recipe from a Malaysian hawker and improved on it, which is the current recipe still being used today. Even to this day, he still packs all the herbs into the bags himself and distributes them to all the different outlets. The herbs are boiled for six hours, transforming them into an aromatic and light broth.

The Original Claypot Bak Kut Teh ($7, without rice) instantly hits you with its fragrant and herbal aroma. The tasty soup comes with lettuce, mushrooms, tau pok, and tender pork ribs. Despite being a herbal soup, the taste isn’t as medicinal as you would expect. This makes it much more palatable for those who aren’t really fans of the herbal version.

The broth is boiled with more than 10 herbs, including dang shen and yu zhu which help give the soup sweetness. The soup is light and the herbs create the perfect blend of flavours together. Simply comforting and delicious!

The pork ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and the tau pok absorbs the herbal broth like a sponge, bursting in flavour with every bite. For a little added crunch, you can also order You Tiao ($1.50), a quintessential side dish for Bak Kut Teh.

What makes Hong Ji stand out from the rest is their wide array of carb options as well. Apart from the usual white rice ($0.70), you can opt for noodles such as Plain Mee Sua Soup and Plain Maggie Mee Soup. Additionally, they also have Plain Ee Mee Soup and Plain Yellow Noodle Soup, all of which are being served at $1.80 each.
