Hidden Gem At Tai Seng – The People’s Nasi Padang

Recently opened in July, The People’s Nasi Padang is owned by Mr Ismail Didih Ibrahim, whose family also runs the popular nasi padang restaurant, Hjh Maimunah. A changed man after his nine-month jail sentence, he now works with Thye Hua Kwan (THK) Family Services, employing people under their Brotherhood programme. Didih has since hired two ex-convicts to run his nasi padang stall, with the hopes that it would allow them to contribute positively to society.

Those who patronize Hjh Maimunah often would probably spot familiar dishes here at The People’s Nasi Padang. With both establishments sharing the same central kitchen, it’s no surprise to find almost identical dishes at both eateries. Didih however has stated that he intends to spice up his menu to separate himself from Hjh Maimunah. On top of that, he has also promised not to charge GST as affordability is his top priority.

For only $16, we ordered the Sotong Hitam, Paru (Beef Lungs), Lemak Chilli Ayam, Beef Rendang, Ayam Goreng, and Tempeh Madu. Considering our meal consists of four types of meat, one seafood, and one veggie, the price point seriously is a bang for your buck. Additionally, their rice costs only $0.50!
Price points of each protein and side are conveniently displayed on their stall front, ensuring you order within your budget. For proteins, they are served at – Beef ($4), Chicken ($3), and Fish ($3/$4) while the sides go between $1 to $1.50. Takeaway is also available at an additional $0.50.
Sotong Hitam

Perfect for seafood lovers, the sotong is soft and tender, with a pleasant kick of heat to lift the dish. Despite being cooked in squid ink, there is hardly any trace of it and is used more for giving the sauce its black hue. We recommend pairing it with the Lemak Chilli Ayam’s gravy for an amazing combination of flavours.
Paru (Beef Lungs)

While some might feel paru (beef lungs) is usually tough and dry, we can assure you these are the exact opposite. Moist and tender, each piece still gives a slight chew with a slight kick of heat. Furthermore, it isn’t too gamey, making it very palatable.
Lemak Chilli Ayam

For some protein, the Lemak Chilli Ayam is tender and juicy, with the silky smooth skin melting beautifully. Dousing a generous amount of gravy over the rice, it contains more coconut milk than the chilli paste, making it lack the spice you would typically expect.
Beef Rendang

A popular staple in Nasi Padang, the beef rendang here is tender but slightly chewy, with certain cubes having a layer of fats that melt nicely. Beefy without being too gamey, the coconut milk is pronounced without overpowering the flavour of the beef.
Ayam Goreng

For a little indulgence, the succulent Ayam Goreng will definitely hit the spot. Each bite is greeted with a delightful crispiness, with the perfect amount of seasoning.
Tempeh Madu

Reminiscent of our childhood chilli Tapioca snack, the Tempeh Madu is made up of Ikan Bilis, Tempeh, and honey, or madu in Malay. Primarily containing ikan bilis, it adds a salty and chewy element unlike the nasi lemak’s which is typically crispy. The honey and slight kick of heat adds balance to the flavours, making it a tasty and unique dish.

Something else unique about this Nasi Padang spot is their chilli, which offers three varieties to enjoy. Starting with their Sambal Tumis, it is your classic nasi lemak chilli, which is more on the sweet side. Their Sambal Belado has notes of spice and tanginess while their belachan has a kick of heat and is made with fermented prawns.
