When we think of fried chicken, the Western and Korean versions typically come to mind. Although there is also the Chinese Zi Char style, better known as Har Cheong Gai, it’s not every day we can find them in individual meals, which brings us to Ah Tan Wings! Serving up one of the best Har Cheong Gai in Singapore, this is a must-try spot for all fried chicken lovers!

Offering two main items, Ah Tan’s menu comprises the Wing Wing Set ($5.70) which has four pieces of har cheong gai (two drumlets and two wings), and the Atas Cutlet Set ($7.20) that is served with a succulent char cheong gai cutlet. Both meals are served with chicken rice and a sunny side egg. Alternatively, you can also opt for the wings ala carte at $2 each with a minimum purchase of two wings per order.
Marinated for at least two days, the wings are double-fried using two different batters. The first batter helps to crisp up the skin, with the second giving the wings their iconic exterior and extra crispiness.

The Wing Wing Set ($5.70) is served with fragrant wings and drumlets, with its tantalizing aroma hitting you as soon as you receive your order. Despite the chicken rice tasting pretty flavourful, some parts of it were fluffy yet clumpy, making it a slight letdown.

The har cheong gai however is absolutely delicious! The exterior is incredibly crispy, while the meat is tender and succulent. Seasoned to perfection, the distinct taste of the prawn paste penetrates right into the meat, giving each bite a delightful burst of flavour. Additionally, the batter isn’t too thick nor too oily, ensuring you won’t feel jelak even after woofing down all the tasty wings.

Served with chicken rice chilli, it adds a pleasant layer of tang and spice that helps to cut through the shrimp paste and oiliness. Besides having room for improvement on their rice, we have nothing but praise for Ah Tan’s wings. For a taste of scrumptious har cheong gai, this is just the spot to head to! Hurry down today!
