Loh Mei Specialist has rare Cantonese loh mei in Chinatown

Have you heard of loh mei, AKA loh kai yik? We don’t blame you if you haven’t, as this is a rare Cantonese dish that’s difficult to find in the Singapore hawker scene. In fact, there is only one stall left that offers the dish, and that’s the aptly named Loh Mei Specialist at People’s Park Food Centre.

As per tradition, the Loh Mei (from $5) here makes extensive use of red fermented beancurd, AKA nanru. That goes into this rich braise, where meat, tofu, vegetables and more are infused with those flavours. Patrons describe this reddish stew as a mix of sweet-savoury flavours, with the distinct taste of nanru shining through.

You’ll find the likes of chicken wings, fishcakes, cuttlefish, taupok, kangkong and various cuts of pork such as pork belly, intestines, skin and more. You can enjoy these items with a bowl of rice or even instant noodles.

We’ve seen some speculation online that the uncle who owns the stall has no successor, which means that when the man eventually retires, we may no longer be able to enjoy this dish at hawker centres. So while you still can, do consider checking out this unique dish at People’s Park Food Centre!
