One of the newest cafes to grace the streets of Bugis is none other than the Muslim-owned Siesta Cafe. What’s interesting and inspiring about it? Well, the owners are actually two 17-year-old polytechnic students! Don’t let their young age fool you as they serve up incredible toasties and unique drinks that are seriously a must-try!

Helmed by two good secondary school friends, Qays Zara, and Aesha Patel, they are currently studying at Republic Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic for diplomas in Events Management and Digital Media Communications respectively.

The idea for the cafe came about from Qays and the owner of the Mediterranean rice bowl eatery, Overrice, where Qays previously worked as a part-timer server. The owner of Overrice, Megan Lim, wanted to encourage Qays to pursue her F&B dream, allowing her and Aesha to open up Siesta cafe on the second floor above Overrice, which Megan owns as well.
While juggling between running the cafe and school might be challenging at times, it is their passion that keeps them going.

Small but cozy, Siesta Cafe is decked with vintage sofas, and wooden tables, with random pop-culture posters pasted near the condiment and tableware station. Their menu is concise and simple, serving up toasties, loaded fries, desserts, and drinks. Four toasties are offered on the menu – 3 Cheeeze Crisp ($14), Beefin’ It Up ($16), On My Life ($14), featuring portobello mushrooms, and Cinnamon Girl ($10).

Their beverages are all priced at $8 and named after iconic pop-culture references like Killmonger from Marvel’s Black Panther which is a Milo ice-blended and Goldslick ($8), featuring an apple crumble latte. If you’re spoiled for choice, you can opt for their “Omakase” ($21). Simply request “Anything” from Aesha and Qays and they’ll surprise you with a toastie and a drink.

Their best-seller is this cheezy delight and believe us when we say it’s for good reason. Indulge in a trio of cheeses – Cheddar, Mozzarella, and Blue Cheese, truffle mayo, and tomatoes, sandwiched between crispy sourdough bread. Though the blue cheese is the most prominent, there’s no trace of the funky taste typically associated with it, making it really palatable.

The truffle mayo shines through in each bite without overpowering the blue cheese while the other cheeses and tomato add balance to the toastie. Despite lacking the insta-worthy cheese pull, the flavours are spot on, making it still a must-try dish.

If you’re in need of protein, this toastie features big juicy chunks of grain-fed beef. Served with cheese, caramelized onions, tomatoes, pickles, and honey mustard, the various components help to cut through the richness of the beef while adding delightful layers of flavour and textures.

If you’re a fan of matcha, Shrek’s Love Potion ($8) takes your classic dirty matcha and elevates it with a dash of cinnamon while the Superwoman Energy Drink ($8) is reminiscent of Ribena, with chia seeds for an added crunch in each sip.
