Maru Mochi has warabimochi and mochi pancakes at Bugis Junction
Just by looking at the huge popularity of Warabimochi Kamakura in Holland Village, you can tell how much Singaporeans love mochi. Another new kid on the block is Maru Mochi hidden at the basement of Bugis Junction. Not only do they offer warabimochi, they also have mochi obanyaki, AKA mochi-stuffed pancakes!
Warabimochi Kamakura Is Opening At Takashimaya With Japan-Famous Mochi Desserts
Though named Maru Mochi here, the dessert brand is known as Maruamami in Hokkaido, Japan. If they ring a bell, it’s probably because of their past pop-ups in Takashimaya and Meidi-ya in Great World. Now, they have finally opened physical stores in Singapore at Bugis Junction and Jurong Point!
The Warabimochi ($4.80 for six pieces) here comes in three flavours: Matcha, Kinako, and Black Sesame. These come in a small cup, with jiggly chunks of mochi coated in the flavour of your choice. We recommend doubling the portion and getting the 12-piece box for $8.80 if you’re buying them to share as you get to save $0.80!
We were most hyped for the the mochi obanyaki. These come in 11 different flavours, and must-tries include Azuki Red Bean, Purple Sweet Potato, and Chocolate & Hazelnut Cream. One piece costs $3.20, but we recommend getting a bundle of three at $8.50 as this works out to be less than $3 per piece.
Out of the lot, our favourite was defo the Black Sesame flavour. This was super fragrant when we tore it in half. Also, look at how stretchy these mochi pancakes were!
A close runner-up would be the Purple Sweet Potato flavour. I liked the small chunks of sweet potato that gave more texture to the otherwise smooth filling.
The store is conveniently located next to Exit C of Bugis MRT Station. When we visited, there was a long queue even though it was after lunch hours on a weekday. So do visit early to avoid a long wait!
