Cat In The Hat has cafe-style bakes at Golden Mile Food Centre

When it comes to satisfying our sweet tooth, hawker centres may not be the first place that comes to mind. However, these humble food centres have been known to offer some of the best pastries in the citythink AJ Delights, Uggli Muffins, or SL II Muffins. We’ve seen some new stalls popping up, and Cat In The Hat is one of the latest to join the fray.

AJ Delights Review: Freshly Baked Apple Streusel And Green Tea Muffins at Alexandra Village Food Centre

Located in Golden Mile Food Centre, Cat In The Hat has a selection of bakes ranging from tarts, madeleines, financiers, and scones. The stall is operated by a mother-daughter pair, who freshly bake everything in-store from 9am daily. In case you were wondering whether their name was an inspiration from the famous Dr. Seuss book, we asked them for you—it turns out that the daughter is a huge cat-lover, and hence wanted a cat-related name for their stall.

We recommend starting with the Lemon Meringue Tart ($3). This dainty tart features a refreshing, zesty lemon centre topped with a dollop of sweet, smooth meringue, contrasting beautifully with a crispy, buttery tart shell. Another popular tart sold here is their Roasted Pecan Tart ($2.80), a savoury treat that has a rich nutty flavour.

Apart from their signature tarts, they also have cakes on their menu. We tried their Black Sesame Financier ($3), which boasted an intense earthy flavour rounded out by mellow roasted notes.

Alternatively, their Pistachio and Raspberry ($4) is another unique cake worth trying. This pistachio mini Bundt is filled with sweet raspberry jam━a perfect combination of fruity and nutty notes.

We particularly loved the Brown Butter Spiced Banana ($2), a dense, chewy cake that’s strongly fragrant with actual banana. It had a good amount of moisture and was not overly sweet, making this a delicious treat.

For more delightful eats in the same hawker centre, check out Braise Lu Zhi Jia, which has braised pork rice bowls from $3.50. Alternatively, if you enjoy eating curry fish head, you might want to visit Mama Curry, which is located in Golden Mile Food Centre too.
