Dough in Jungle has cheap buns and waffles in Tampines North
Since moving into my Tampines North BTO flat, I’ve been looking for hidden gem bakeries around the estate. Recently, on one of my walks around the neighbourhood, I stumbled upon Dough in Jungle. This new-ish bakery is tucked in Tampines Greenverge—an easy six-minute bus ride from Tampines MRT Station.
The neighbourhood bakery sells a variety of freshly baked buns, doughnuts and more at affordable prices. They have an array of mini buns to choose from, priced at $1 each or $4.50 for five pieces, which you can mix and match.
One interesting flavour that caught my eye was the Ondeh Ondeh, which came in a striking green hue, dotted with specks of desiccated coconut on the outside.
Similar to the classic ondeh ondeh kueh, you get shredded coconut flakes in the middle, cooked with gula melaka for a rich depth of sweetness. The main difference here is that the exterior comprises a pandan-infused bun instead of a chewy kueh skin. I really enjoyed the fluffy bread, paired with the fragrant coconut filling!
If you’re a fan of soft and floppy waffles, don’t leave without trying Dough in Jungle’s rendition, priced from $1.80.
A must-have for me is the Peanut Waffle ($2.20). This came with a generous slathering of peanut butter, which quickly melted upon contact with the hot waffle.
Sink your teeth into the freshly baked waffle, which boasted a discernible pandan fragrance and soft, kueh-like texture.
If you’re in the mood for something different, try their Mango Cream Cheese Waffle ($2.60) instead. While I was disappointed by the lack of real mango chunks, the cream cheese spread was surprisingly pleasant.
You get a subtle hint of the sweet fruit in each bite, and I liked how this mango-flavoured cream cheese wasn’t too sweet or jelak.
If Tampines is too out of the way for you, consider one of these best old-school waffles places in Singapore! Otherwise, head to Yi Jia Bakery House Cafe along Thomson Road to get your fill of old-school buns, thick kaya waffles and more.
