All good things must come to an end. After 54 years of operations, the owners of the famous Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow At Ghim Moh Food Centre have officially announced their retirement. The sudden announcement was posted yesterday on the stall’s Facebook page, with the owners thanking customers for their support over the years.

Previously helmed by recently retired Tan Hock Guan and Chang Kha Noi, Guan Kee Fried Kway Teow was established in 1969, starting out as a street stall at Thye Hong Centre before settling at Ghim Moh Food Centre in 1978.

They have gained immense popularity over the years and were even listed in the Michelin Bib Gourmand list in 2019. Although the waiting time is usually at least 30 minutes, that has never stopped the steady stream of customers from getting a taste of one of the best Char Kway Teow in Singapore.

Less than two months ago, the owners had to scale back on their operating hours, informing customers that they would only be open on the weekends every week. This was probably due to the fatigue from running the stall as the couple started their day at 4am to prepare the ingredients.

Prices started from $4 and it was worth every buck. The Char Kway Teow was served with a generous amount of ingredients like fishcake, egg, lup cheong, cockles, pork lard, and vegetables, delivering layers of textures and flavours to the dish.
The flavours were on point, delivering a beautiful balance of sweetness and savouriness, with a pleasant kick of spice. Additionally, the wok hey added an incredible smokiness that gave each bite a harmonious balance of flavours. Served in big and crispy chunks, the pork lard added umami and crunch, making it simply divine when paired with the noodles.
