Tam Chiak Kopitiam in Kovan brings together famous hawker stalls

A hot new opening hit Kovan yesterday, and it isn’t a restaurant, cafe, or a single hawker stall, but a whole host of 10 stalls under one roof, in Tam Chiak Kopitiam.

It’s not just the stalls in Tam Chiak Kopitiam that are of renown—the kopitiam is co-owned by local food writer Maureen Ow, otherwise known as @MissTamChiak, as well as Mediacorp actor Chew Chor Meng and radio DJ Dennis Chew.

If you’re a fan of scrambled eggs, you’ll be happy to know that Dan Lao, the super popular Maxwell stall run by former Eggslut chefs, is one of the stalls that’s now open here.

The same short menu of six scrambled egg-topped bowls can be found at Tam Chiak Kopitiam, such as Tomato ($4.50)Luncheon Meat ($5), and Chicken Cutlet ($6).

Michelin-recommended Ru Ji Kitchen is another brand that’s set up shop in this kopitiam; the family-run business has outlets in Holland Drive, Old Airport Road, and Redhill, but this is their first in the North-Eastern part of Singapore. Fans love their fishballs, which are still handmade each day, as well as Ru Ji’s house-made sambal, which you can find in an order of Fishball Noodles (from $4).

Yet another Michelin-recognised brand to look out for when you visit is Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang, which won a Michelin Plate in 2021, and has been listed in the guide since. Try their signature Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang ($6.20), which stars Indonesian-style grilled chicken in a spicy, house-made sauce with coconut rice.

Joining the list of stalls at Tam Chiak Kopitiam is XXL wonton noodle stall Wen Kang Ji, though you won’t be able to enjoy their wonton mee here. Instead, get Big Prawn Noodles (price TBD), plus Teochew Style Red Grouper Fish Soup (price TBD)—similar offerings to their Jurong East outlet.

Other than these, look forward to Oppa Kitchen by local singer Ang Jun Yang, who’s employed a Korean chef to dish up legit Korean fried chicken and more. There’s 888 Mookata, another celebrity-owned mookata stall jointly run by Mediacorp artistes Chew Chor Meng and Zhou Chongqing, Flaky Haus, a pastry and dessert stall, and even Chef De Pasta, for kopitiam Western fare.

If you’re looking for more Kovan eats, check out 51 Ming Fa Wanton Egg Noodle for old-school wonton mee that sells out by lunchtime, or Yam Mee Teochew Fishball Noodles for super rich laksa by third-gen hawkers!
