Best food to eat in Sengkang
Having lived and grown up in Sengkang my entire life, you can be certain of my recommendations on the best grubs to get here! Though it is located far up the North East Line, the food scene in the area is far more vibrant and exciting than what most people expect it to be. As a proud native of this neighbourhood, here are the 14 best Sengkang food spots you shouldn’t miss!
1. Zoey’s Diner
Zoey’s Diner is well-known among Sengkang residents for their affordable yet creative burgers. Their signature burger is a fusion of Chinese bao and a Western burger, which they have affectionately named “Baobae”. A popular pick is their Buttermilk Fried Chicken ($8.90), which has crispy fried chicken topped with fluffy Baobae buns. Another bestseller is Zoey’s Classic Cheese Burger ($9.90), a succulent beef patty layered with house-made Zoey’s Burger Sauce.

2. Michin Korean BBQ And Hotpot
Earlier this year, you may have seen TikTok users hanging onto pull-up bars for free food—a challenge that was started by Michin Korean BBQ And Hotpot. Apart from their creative challenges, they serve one of the most affordable Korean BBQ and hotpots in Sengkang, with their 90-minute buffet starting from just $22.95++! Choose from six soup bases and indulge in a spread of more than 40 different ingredients, including Australian Wagyu, Spanish Iberico pork, and even Japanese snow crab!

If you are looking for some comfort food, look no further than Jun Yuan House of Fish, a Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee in 2021 and 2022. Well known for the quality ingredients used in their dishes, they recently opened their new store at Sengkang Square in October this year.
I highly recommend going for their signature Herbal Seafood Soup ($6), a rich broth containing pork, seafood, and a combination of herbs which are meant to be immunity-boosting. Otherwise, their X.O. Fried Batang Fish Soup ($6) is a superb choice as well. For extra flavour, dip your fish in their house-made chilli which is made with a fermented bean base.

5. Tenderbest Makcik Tuckshop
Nestled within the quiet estate of Jalan Kayu, Tenderbest Makcik Tuckshop whips up modern tuckshop food with a sense of nostalgia. Their Honey Glazed Roast Spring Chicken is said to be tender and well-roasted, a popular pick with diners.
If you can’t decide between fish or chicken, the Super Feesh and Chic ($12.90) gives you the best of both worlds—besides the hand-battered cherry snapper here, you get a side of crispy chicken skin instead of the usual fries!! For an interesting local twist, have a shot at their Asian fusion pasta menu which comprises Laksa Prawn Spaghetti ($10.90) or Chilli Crab Pasta ($10.90).

Another hidden gem in Jalan Kayu, Jerry’s BBQ and Grill pride themselves on their Memphis-style BBQ. You definitely have to try their house speciality Baby Back Pork Ribs, which come in either a Half ($$24.95) or Full ($36.95) slab. The pork ribs are said to be ‘dry barbecued’ in Memphis fashion and slathered with a tangy vinegar-based sauce for a richer flavour. For side dishes, the Buffalo Wings (from $15.95++) and Truffle Fries ($14.95++) are perfect for sharing if you’re here in a group.

Today, his famous stall is located in the heart of the Sengkang neighbourhood, with patrons including Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong!
Their simple yet delicious Char Kway Teow ($4) has long been loved for its sweet and savoury flavours. It’s stir-fried with fresh ingredients such as pork lard, egg, bean sprouts, cockles, and fish cake.

First-timers can start with their Signature Thunder Tea Rice ($5.90/$6.90), which starts with a base of brown rice, topped with assorted vegetables, tau kwa, peanuts, and ikan bilis, over which a herbaceous tea soup is poured. I’ll never forget the days when my friends and I would head to Thasevi Food for late-night supper after watching movies at Seletar Mall. Thasevi Food is open 24 hours, which makes it a great dining spot throughout the day. My standard pairing here is Egg Prata ($2.60) and Roti John Chicken ($6.70), served with curry on the side, and washed down with a cup of warm Teh Tarik ($1.80).

12. Munchi Pancakes
Ever since Munchi Pancakes opened at Fernvale Hawker Centre, I can never leave the area without my mother asking me to buy their pancakes before heading home. Munchi Pancakes serves traditional min jiang kueh in a variety of flavours, ranging from peanut, black sesame to even biscoff! You can choose from three pancake flavours: Original, Charcoal and Matcha.
Of their signature pancakes, my personal favourite is the Belgian Chocolate Munchi ($1.80), with rich Belgian chocolate sandwiched between the fluffy pancake. Other interesting flavours here include Oreo Cheese ($1.80) and Thai Milk Tea ($1.80).

The Apricus Coffee & Food Co. debunks any myths that Sengkang is a dead zone for classy cafes. Founded by the same team behind The Populus, The Apricus Coffee & Food Co. serves delightful brunch treats and desserts. The Apricus French Toast ($22+) will please dessert lovers with its fluffy vanilla brioche toast topped with roasted rice soft serve. Rather than the cafe-standard truffle fries, they’ve got a Crispy Potato Stack ($12+). This is a fried, confit cube of thinly sliced potato with a crisp exterior, and buttery, melt-in-the-mouth centre.
