9 Best Stalls At Hong Lim Food Centre You Must Try!

1. Eddy’s

Ever tasted atas food at a hawker centre before? If you haven’t, maybe it’s time to check out Eddy’s Duck Confit then! Opened by Malaysian-born chef, Eddy Wan, the duck is marinated overnight for 24 hours and is seasoned before slow-cooking it for at least 14 to 16 hours.  The result is a glorious piece of duck leg that simply cuts through like butter. The duck meat is ridiculously tender, yet still has a firm bite to it.

Flavour-wise, it is well-seasoned with a mild salty spice taste to it. Additionally, a secret spice is added to give each bite an explosion of flavours. For sides, the mashed potato comes highly recommended as it adds a creamy texture in contrast to the duck. The mash is drizzled with gravy and served with grilled corn on the cob. A must-try dish indeed!

2. Cantonese Delights

One of the legendary stalls at Hong Lim Food Centre, Cantonese Delights draws snaking queues daily for their bestseller, the Chicken Cutlet Curry Noodles. Generously drenched in Chinese curry, many describe the fried chicken cutlet as heavenly, as it is fresh and crispy.

The Chinese curry is notable to be thick and rich in flavour, with a hint of coconut taste, thanks to the coconut milk that is used. It’s so good, the bowl of curry is worth every calorie. Get a scoop of bouncy yet firm egg noodles, some fried chicken cutlet, and sink the spoon into the curry before taking the most scrumptious bite that will have you coming back for more!

3. Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist

Having achieved the Michelin Plate status for six years in a row, you’re definitely in for a delightful treat at Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist. What makes them unique is their use of a machine that cooks and tosses the noodles. Additionally, as they have a specific type of noodle manufactured for their stall, it gives the noodles an exceptionally bouncy and springy texture that customers can’t get enough of!

The Char Siew Wanton Noodles are served with springy noodles tossed in a fragrant homemade sauce, with a dollop of Ji Ji’s chilli served on the side. Don’t forget to mix the chilli in for a burst of smokiness and spice! Additionally, the hae bi within the chilli gives a delightful aroma to the noodles. Bits of crunchy pork lard and shallots are also topped off for extra umami.

Tender and well-marinated, the char siew has the perfect fat-to-lean meat ratio. The star of the dish are no doubt Ji Ji’s fried wantons, which are packed with a generous amount of pork filling. The tasty wantons are fried to perfection, giving them the most amazing crunch. Not only that, you get the best of both worlds as plump boiled wantons are also served. This is a stall that has truly earned its stripes!

4. Hokkien Street Bak Kut Teh

Being one of the few hawker stalls left in Singapore serving Hokkien-style Bak Kut Teh, Hokkien Street Bak Kut Teh is definitely a spot to check out. Featured in the Michelin Guide, Hokkien Street is one of two Bak Kut Teh stalls on the first level of Hong Lim Food Centre. Compared to your typical bak kut teh, the Hokkien version uses a variety of herbs and soy sauce which gives a darker and slightly bitter herbal taste. Served with pork ribs, this comforting and unique dish is certainly not to be missed!

5. Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee

Said to serve one of the best Char Kway Teow in Singapore, Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee sees hour-long queues daily. With a Michelin Bib Gourmand under their belt, a huge reason for the long wait is that the orders are cooked in batches and each batch is made entirely from scratch.

As the noodles are fried with eggs first, it gives the noodles a creamier texture and makes them wetter as compared to others. Heaped with crunchy beansprouts and juicy cockles, the super smoky char kway teow is loved by many for its freshness and deep flavour. Simply take one bite, and you’ll instantly know why this dish is worth the wait!

6. Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa

Achieving the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for three years in a row, Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa was established in 1997 and continues drawing crowds to this day. Their laksa broth is freshly boiled daily for two hours, simmering it with dried scallops and dried oysters. Using less coconut milk, it allows the flavours of the scallops and oysters to shine in the broth.

For a spicy kick of heat, be sure to add a spoonful of their sambal chilli! What makes this stall stand out from others is truly their use of seafood not just in their broth, but in the dish itself as well. Their Asia Delight Laksa is served with two sizeable halves of crayfish, prawns, and cockles, giving laksa and seafood lovers the best of both worlds.

7. Coffee Break

Looking for a twist on your usual Kopi and Kaya Toast breakfast combo? Wait no more because Coffee Break located in Chinatown is going to give you a different experience when it comes to one of our iconic breakfast combos.

For a coffee fix, you can consider getting their Hazelnut Latte – which comes in both hot and cold. The hazelnut latte is extremely nutty and does not lack in terms of quality, as high-quality coffee beans and syrups are used in the drinks. From just a sip, you can tell that a lot of hard work is put into serving you a good cup of coffee!

Besides the usual Kaya Toast, a popular option would be their Black Sesame Butter Toast. At Coffee Break, they slice their toasted wholemeal bread across thinly before spreading the black sesame spread.  By having the toast thinly sliced, it makes it extra crispy! The black sesame spread has a slight sweetness to it, which also complements the butter that comes with the toast. A unique and tasty breakfast awaits at Coffee Break!

Founded over 61 years ago, Heng Kee is one of the two famous stalls selling curry chicken noodles at Hong Lim Food Centre, located at level 2. Using a curry recipe nearly 50 years old, each bowl is served with a thick and robust gravy, slices of tender Hainanese-style poached chicken, potatoes and delicious curry-soaked tau pok. Each sip of curry brings you an incredible burst of sweetness, savouriness and spice that’s so addictive, you’ll empty the entire bowl!

9. Dong Fang Hong Sotong Ball Seafood Soup

Ending off with a tasty and comforting dish, Dong Fang Hong serves only one item on their menu, which is Sotong Ball Seafood Soup. Offering sotong balls, meatballs and fishballs, what makes them stand out is that each one is handmade! To make your meal a little more substantial, you can add noodles, such as ee mian, mi tai mak, kway teow, mee sua or bee hoon, or have it with a bowl of white rice.

Each bowl of seafood soup is packed with ingredients – about 5 balls (a mixture of sotong, fish and meatballs), fish dumplings, seaweed and fried garlic chips. Each ball is seasoned well and delicious, pairing perfectly with the tasty and light fish stock broth. As they sell out pretty fast and are open for only three hours daily, be sure to head down early to not miss out!
